A bleak dusshera looms ahead for the state

Posted by Shanker Thursday, September 24, 2009

The government has never had it so bad. It barely has funds to pay Dushhera festive allowances for its own employees and there is a gaping revenue deficit in almost all its departments. Added to that is the looming threat of the swine flu and a severe food shortage. The last threat especially has by and large been downplayed by this very government earlier but now the deficit is become too huge to hide. Thanks to a late SW monsoon over 50 lac hectares in the state have turned into brownish barren swathes of land. The food grain production is likely to be just half of what it was in 2008 and the consequent result is plain bad as far as the public is concerned. There is every chance that prices of paddy, ragi, jowar, groundnut, sugarcane and turmeric will once again surge after the festive season is over. And meanwhile the state government is alarmed about the fact that the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said there is little chance of rainfall in the next one week as the South-West monsoon is drawing to a close. So overall there is little to cheer to about as the state heads for festive weekend.
