Congress candidate K Bharathi has won the byelection in Tekkali by 7,173 votes. Political analysts concluded that the win was a result of the sympathy wave in favour of Congress across the state. The allegations of cash and liquor supply by TDP could not deter the Congress candidate from winning the election. Speaking to the media, K Bharathi said that the people of Tekkali will always remember the good work done by YSR and hence a win here was inevitable. However even she agreed that the party had anticipated a bigger win here. This byelection had become an issue of prestige for PRP as it had a stronghold on this region and was a great opportunity to prove its strength. But the tragic demise of Dr.Y.S Rajasekhar Reddy had turned the fortune in favour of Congress here. The result turns out to be a huge blow for PRP which had anticipated a much better result in its own backyard.
The total number of votes polled for various parties are
Congress- 59,250
TDP- 52,077
PRP- 17,858
Lok Satta- 1,277
The election was held on 10th September and 76% votes were polled. Six candidates contesting from Tekkali are K Bharathi (Congress), K Atchan Naidu (TDP), Duvvada Srinivas (PRP), Chandrasekhar Patnaik (Lok Satta) and independents D Sridhar and N Bhaskar. Earlier this year, K Revathipath (Congress) had won from Tekkali but he died just a day before he could be sworn in.
