Acid attackers to be slapped with 3 yrs non-bailable arrest

The state government has had enough of love-lorn attackers splaying acid on young girls and women. Going forward section 509 will stipulate that acid attackers be charged with a non-bailable offence which will necessitate that they spend a minimum of 3 years in prison. AN announcement to this affect was made by home minister Sabitha Indira Reddy, who by the way had come under severe criticism from women’s groups that she was not doing enough as a home minister to protect the interests of women. Hitherto, those accused for acid attacks were booked under Section 326 of IPC. But now they will also be covered under Section 509 of IPC. "The government has issued two ordinances," said the home minister, Mrs P. Sabita Indra Reddy, "They will be sent to the Central government for amendments”. The minister justified the amendments stating that “We want to deal firmly against those indulging in attacks on women and ensure deterrent punishment,"
